What makes a good first-run checklist?

Three to six steps that end in the user seeing real value, ordered so the earliest step is the cheapest to complete. Setup chores belong after the moment the product proves itself, not before it.

Why not more than six steps?

Completion rate falls sharply as a checklist grows. Anything past the sixth item is usually better handled by in-app prompts triggered later, once the user has a reason to care.

Does it work for non-SaaS products?

It is tuned for software onboarding, but any product with a first-run experience — a marketplace, an internal tool, a mobile app — will get a usable draft from a clear description.
